While the rest of the smart phone market turn to curvy displays, Google-owned communications company Motorola is going for open-source modular mobile phones. Motorola is working with Eindhoven Design Academy graduate Dave Hakkens to further develop Phonebloks, a mobile phone that allows the user to have near-total customizability. The phone has a structural base frame and endless supply of modules that lock on to it, which could include an longer lasting battery, better camera, better speakers or additional keyboard, whatever you wish your phone to have – possibilities are endless. Motorola hopes to utilize Hakkens´wide social media communities for people to design their own components. Motorola widens their opensource mentality where they see the advantages in developing new devices and applications that they would have never imagined inside their own labs. Truly different approach from Apple for example. And truly different outlook too, going from the sleek thin designs that are the hygiene factors of today mobile phone industy, to more challenging aesthetics. But we guess that it is the idea behind that makes you want this, not the looks.

David Hakkens´ Phonebloks modularity is to solve primarily the waste problem. Electronic waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. Secondly the product aims to provide customization that has always been critical part of the user experience. Google´s Moto X gave the first glimpse of the company customization path, but with the Phonebloks we can create our own unique designs.

Kun muu älypuhelinmarkkina luo kurvikkaita näyttöjä, Googlen omistama Motorola lähtee kehittämään open source pohjaista modulaarista puhelinta. Motorola tekee yhteistyötä Eindhoven kasvatin Dave Hakkenin kanssa kehittääkseen Phonebloks puhelinta, jossa on lähes rajattomat muokkausmahdollisuudet. Puhelimessa on perusrunko, johon voidaan kiinnittää moduuleita kuten parempi kestoinen patteri, parempi kamera, lisätä kaiuttimia tai näppäimistön – rajattomasti mitä vain tahdot puhelimessasi olevan. Motorola toivoo Hakkenin laajan sosiaalisen median yhteisön kehittävän näitä komponentteja, koska heille open source on lähtökohtaisesti mahdollisuutena kehittää parempia tuotteita ja applikaatioita.

Ensisijaisesti Dave Hakkens haluaa tarjota ratkaisua jäteongelmaan. Elektroninen jäte on yksi nopeiten kasvavista jätteiden lähteistä maailmassa. Toiseksi hän tarjoaa puhelimeen muokkausmahdollisuuksia, koska puhelimen kustomointi on yksi avaintekijöitä kokemuksessa. Googlen Moto X tarjosi ensimmäisen näkymän yrityksen kustomointistrategiaan, mutta Phonebloks vie tämän vielä pidemmälle – jolloin me voimme muokata tuotteesta täysin uniikkeja.
