Exciting development from the danish toy giant in regards to material technologies. LEGO is investing in developing the products to be better for the environment. The company will invest $150 million on developing the product materials to be more climate-friendly and to make the packaging more sustainable.

LEGO has already made some efforts towards sustainable thinking. In 2013 they partnered with WWF to make the products more sustainable, use FSC-certificated packages and reduced the package size. They have also invested in wind power for reduced carbon footprint. LEGO have ended its 50-year long relationship with Shell, after the infamous oil company received serious criticism due to its drilling in the Arctic.

Next step is to make the actual LEGO material environment-friendly. ‘Several factors influence the environmental sustainability of a material — the composition of the material, how it is sourced and what happens when the product reaches the end of its life,’ says the CEO of the company Jørgen Vig Knudstorp.

To make sure LEGO will reach its targets by the year 2030, The LEGO Group is establishing LEGO Sustainable Materials Centre for the research and development of the new materials.

With 60 billion LEGOS made last year alone, the changes can actually make a relatively great impact on the environment. But what is even greater is the way it shows to the others about responsibility.
